A second national lockdown in England that pushes into the season of Advent follows a full spring lockdown that left us observing and praying through Lent and Easter in isolation and separation.
These are strange times. Catholics miss the Sacraments but Christ is not bound by the lockdown – He simply walks with us. Churches are closed for public worship but open for private prayer. Our priests and bishops continue to celebrate daily Mass – just without their usual congregations. This is painful, but we know it is temporary.
28 Images for 28 Days
This photography project keeps the Risen Christ at the heart of the Church and in the hearts of the people. Our photographer has visited Catholic churches in and around London and the south east to provide a fly-on-the-wall view of the celebration of Mass in the solemn setting of an empty church.
There are 28 images for the 28 days that Mass will be celebrated in empty churches.
The photographs were taken in black and white – not to drain the heart and soul from the images but to show how important the people are to the Church – the Body of Christ. We await – as we do in Advent – to be closer to the Lord.
We know that 28 days later, the people will return.
And so will the colour, the life and the joy as we celebrate a return to Mass.
