Train to be a classroom assistant

To become a classroom assistant (teaching assistant) in the UK, key training courses include RQF-regulated certificates in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (Levels 2 and 3), the T Level in Education and Early Years, and specialised courses for SEN or higher-level roles. These qualifications are available through local colleges, online providers, or via apprenticeships.

  • Apprenticeships: Teaching Assistant Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeships combine on-the-job training with study.
  • Online/College Courses: Institutions like NCFE, CACHE, and TQUK offer accredited certifications that can often be done online or at local colleges.
  • Volunteering: While not a course, volunteering in a local school is highly recommended to build necessary experience.

Entry Requirements

  • Schools often require GCSEs (grades 9-4) in English and Maths.
  • A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required to work with children.
