Role Overview:

To provide a technical support service to the science department, including preparation of materials, setting up equipment for practical classes and assisting in practical lessons.


Key Responsibilities:

Under the direction/control of the Senior Science technician to:

  1. Provide assistance and information as required in the preparation of resources for practical lessons that meet both the health & safety standards and the requirements of the classes involved, including:
  • Preparation of solutions, materials, cultures for living organisms
  • Assembling apparatus
  • Obtaining materials by local purchase.  Trialling practical activities
  • Carrying out risk assessments for technician activities
  • Assisting in practical classes
  • Constructing and modifying apparatus
  1. Provide general assistance in the safe storage, transit and accessibility of resources, including helping to
  • Ensure that stock levels are maintained and future requirements are identified
  • Ensure the availability of suitable resources
  • Compile orders and to liaise with suppliers and finance departments as/when required
  • Delivery of equipment, materials and organisms to rooms
  • Collection of, checking and returning resources to stores
  • Maintaining resources, including routine repairs
  • Keep up to date with health & safety requirements
  • Caring for plants and animals
  1. Assisting the technician team to ensure a healthy, safe and productive work environment through the routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment, laboratories and prep rooms
  • Organising and storing resources
  • General cleaning of laboratory bench surfaces and fixed equipment
  • Cleaning laboratory sinks
  • Cleaning used equipment
  • Disposing of waste materials
  • Preparing standard solutions
  • Treating waste materials
  • General cleaning and repair of equipment
  • Checking deliveries

  2. Appreciate and support the role of other professionals
  3. Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required
  4. Participate in training and other learning activities and performance management as required
  5. Assist with the supervision of students out of lesson times e.g. clubs, extra-curricular activities
  6. Will be expected to provide First Aid
