Pope Leo XIV’s pilgrimage to four African nations highlights the strength of peoples long burdened by the yoke of colonialism and calls us to take part in building a more just, fraternal, and compassionate present and future.

Speaking at the Regina Coeli after Mass in Angola, Pope Leo XIV expresses closeness to the people of Ukraine amid intensified attacks and appeals for dialogue and diplomatic efforts in Lebanon.

During Mass in Luanda’s suburb of Kilamba, Pope Leo XIV insists that Jesus is alive, is risen, and walks beside Angolans, and notes that if all the faithful welcome the Lord and His presence in their midst, their nation – that has seen much suffering – can be graced with a blessed and peaceful future.

The pontiff urged the country to overcome old divisions, reject corruption, and help young people recover hope.

Speaking with members of the Catholic University of Central Africa, the Pope highlights the university’s role in forming future leaders and professionals who will have the responsibility to work for the common good in their own society and around the world.

Pope Leo XIV makes a private visit to St. Paul Catholic Hospital in Douala, visiting and praying with patients, families, and hospital staff.

Upon returning to Yaoundé, Pope Leo XIV meets with several representatives of Cameroon’s Islamic communities, encouraging people of all faiths to work toward peace based on mutual respect.

The Holy Father will ultimately spend several days in Cameroon before heading on to Angola and then Equatorial Guinea during his first apostolic journey to Africa.

Pope Leo XIV visits the Ngul Zamba Orphanage in Yaoundé, and encourages children who have faced hardship to see themselves as part of a loving family, thanking caregivers for their dedicated service.

During his first official event in Cameroon, Pope Leo XIV calls for peace, justice, and a renewed commitment to the common good, highlighting that peace “must not be reduced to a slogan.”
