Teacher of English

Salary:  MPS/UPS (as appropriate)

Responsible to:  Head of English Faculty

Contract: In accordance with the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document

Core Purpose

The Teacher of English will, under the reasonable direction of the Headteacher, carry out the professional duties of a teacher in accordance with the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document and Teachers’ Standards.

The post holder will contribute to the mission of Sacred Heart Catholic Academy by promoting and safeguarding the Catholic ethos of the school, supporting the spiritual and moral development of all pupils, and demonstrating a commitment to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Catholic Ethos and Mission

  • Support and actively promote the Catholic ethos, values and mission of the school in all aspects of professional conduct.
  • Contribute to the prayer life, collective worship and liturgical celebrations of the school.
  • Demonstrate, through professional example, a commitment to Gospel values.

2. Teaching and Learning

  • Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality lessons in English across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
  • Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils.
  • Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged pupils.
  • Promote excellent standards of literacy and numeracy within the subject.
  • Make effective use of assessment to inform teaching and secure good progress.

3. Assessment, Recording and Reporting

  • Assess, record and report on the development, progress and attainment of pupils in line with school policy.
  • Provide regular, high-quality feedback to pupils to support progress.
  • Contribute to the preparation of pupils for external examinations, including GCSE English.
  • Use data effectively to monitor progress and implement appropriate interventions.

4. Behaviour and Safeguarding

  • Establish a safe, purposeful and inclusive learning environment.
  • Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a positive learning climate.
  • Uphold the school’s safeguarding policies and procedures and promote the welfare of all pupils.

5. Wider Professional Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of departmental schemes of work and resources.
  • Participate fully in departmental meetings, INSET and professional development opportunities.
  • Fulfil the role of Form Tutor, if required, and support pupils’ personal development.
  • Maintain effective communication with parents/carers.
  • Contribute to the wider life of the school, including extracurricular activities.

6. Accountability

  • Be accountable for pupils’ attainment, progress and outcomes.
  • Reflect on practice and engage in professional development to improve teaching.
  • Support whole-school priorities and improvement planning.
