Every year we not only welcome children from European countries such as Italy, Poland, Germany, France, Spain, and the Netherlands but from further afield such as South Korea, Hong Kong and Mexico. The Stonyhurst Experience offers a combination of courses for children aged between 10 and 17 years of age. The young people in our care are given the individual attention, encouragement, resources and space to experience student life at Stonyhurst.
Overview
The Deputy Head of Pastoral Care will be involved in the day-to-day operation of the school with particular responsibility for the development and delivery of the safeguarding procedures, accommodation planning and working with the Health and Wellbeing Centre on the particular medical and wellbeing needs of the language school applicants before their arrival and for the duration of their stay. This role has responsibility for the pastoral care and general welfare of the students throughout the duration of the course. The Deputy Head of Pastoral Care will be involved in the day-to-day operation of the course reporting to the operational management team, with operational responsibility on set days according to a rota. There will be a range of supervisory duties, including overnight boarding and general operations on a rota basis.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
- To complete pre-course work reviewing the needs of the language school applicants and liaising with the Health and Wellbeing Centre, parents and students to ensure the administration of each student’s welfare and care is considered prior to their arrival.
- To be a full and active member of the Operations Management Team to ensure the successful planning and operation of the language school.
- To help plan and lead the Staff Inset days and Student Induction in collaboration with the Operations Management Team.
- To be responsible for planning and the fair delegation of staff night duties for each boarding house.
- To be responsible for all pastoral issues concerning staff, students, and parents.
- To promote the health, well-being, and safety of all students, whilst supporting staff to monitor and report any concerns arising for the duration of the course.
- To be the first point of liaison with the Health and Wellbeing Centre, Laundry, and domestic staff.
- To maintain student records relating to health, medication, and other relevant issues using the appropriate methods and digital systems.
- Assist with the student arrival and departure schedules, welcoming students, and parents to the school.
- Be available to communicate with parents via email or telephone when required regarding welfare and pastoral concerns.
- Assist the Management Team should any unexpected events arise.
- To liaise with the Experience Team in the delivery of the programme.
- There will be a free day each week incorporated into the timetable for all staff. You will be on duty 6 days per week. The night before your day off and the night of your day off you will be off duty.
Pastoral Care/Welfare Responsibilities
- To have read and understood the Stonyhurst policies concerning pastoral care and the protection of children set out in the staff handbook.
· To have read and passed Level 1 & 2 of the Lancashire Safeguarding Children Board E Learning Course before the course commences (proof of certificate will be required).
- To maintain student safety as a top priority and follow the Stonyhurst guidelines on Health and Safety contained in the staff handbook.
· To be diligent in carrying out supervisory duties according to the guidelines in the Staff Handbook.
- To be responsible for the overall welfare of students and ensure that the needs of all ages are met both on and off campus.
- To assist with accommodation planning and allocation of students where appropriate, with particular regard to the younger students.
- To be in charge of one of the boarding houses and supervise the staff on duty.
- To have overall responsibility for all boarding house operations, ensuring the best experience for students according to their needs. Liaising with boarding house leads, monitoring cleanliness and room inspections.
- To oversee the administration of medicines in collaboration with the Health and Wellbeing Centre.
- To support staff regarding student behavioural issues.
- Wherever possible to accompany students to the nurse/hospital, or if not possible, an appropriate deputy or health centre staff member.
- To ensure that pastoral staff are available for students to see, and that links are fully maintained with the students.
- To handover pastoral care responsibilities and medicine pouches to a designated member of staff when not on duty.
- To check that religious and dietary needs are being met for all students.
- To continue to develop procedures for obtaining comprehensive feedback from students and parents on all aspects of the course programme. Special attention should be paid to students who appear to be unhappy with any part of their experience at the summer language school and resolve as soon as possible.
- To have overall responsibility for all matters involving the school nurse, such as student appointments, medical records, pastoral deputies/nurse liaison and emergency contact.
· To wear the ID’s and Summer School clothing when on duty.
· To hold, maintain and monitor student welfare and behaviours through appropriate digital systems.
Person Specification
Essential:
· To be committed to the safeguarding and welfare of children and young people.
· A willingness to become a certified DSL, support and training for this will be provided.
· To be in sympathy with the Stonyhurst ethos and tradition and be able to support the ideals set out in the Mission Statement.
· To have experience of working in a similar residential environment and/or role (e.g., House Parent, Deputy Housemistress/Housemaster, Matron). A teaching qualification is not required.
· To enjoy working with young people.
· To have excellent organisational skills.
· To have good time management skills and be able to prioritise tasks.
· To have good communication skills, written and verbal.
· To be able to build positive professional relationships with colleagues.
· To have the ability to be a team player but also be able to use own initiative when necessary.
· To be discreet, tactful, approachable, and diplomatic.
· To be flexible and adaptable to the operational needs of the Stonyhurst Language School, by being an active and collaborative member of the Operations Management Team.
