The Saint John Henry Newman School is seeking to appoint a committed and enthusiastic Cover Supervisor to join our dedicated Cover Department. This is an excellent opportunity for a confident and adaptable individual who enjoys working with young people and wants to play a vital role in supporting teaching and learning within a thriving Catholic secondary school.

The successful candidate will contribute to maintaining our strong learning culture while upholding and supporting the Catholic ethos and Mission Statement of the school.


About the Role

As a Cover Supervisor, you will supervise whole classes during the short-term absence of teachers, ensuring that students remain engaged in pre-set work and maintain high standards of behaviour and conduct.

This role is central to the smooth day-to-day running of the school and requires professionalism, resilience, and the ability to build positive relationships with students and staff.


Key Responsibilities

Classroom Supervision

  • Supervise students during short-term teacher absence using pre-set work
  • Register student attendance accurately
  • Ensure students remain on task and complete work set
  • Provide feedback to the absent teacher
  • Promote positive behaviour and engagement

Student Support

  • Support pupils to access the curriculum effectively
  • Encourage interaction and positive participation
  • Help maintain high standards of discipline and respect

Wider School Contribution

  • Undertake break and lunchtime duties as directed
  • Provide administrative support when not covering lessons
  • Accompany staff and pupils on educational visits where required
  • Provide first aid cover in the absence of the school nurse (training provided)
  • Attend meetings, INSET, training and CPD as required
  • Participate fully in the life of the school community, including Secondary Transfer Evening
