JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title – Teacher of PE

Group – Academic

Reports to – Director of Sport

JOB PURPOSE:

Sport holds a central position in the life of the school and the successful candidate will be responsible for delivering an engaging Physical Education curriculum from Early Years to KS3. With outstanding facilities and dedicated staff, our pupils have the opportunity to regularly participate in and enjoy a rich variety of sports and activities as part of their weekly Games and PE provision.

The Teacher of PE will need to understand and respond to the academic, emotional and intellectual needs of the pupils, with particular reference to successful learning styles and motivation, ensuring that our PE department is recognised as a strength within the School.

A key priority will be the introduction and expansion of girls PE, offering equal opportunities and differentiated teaching for all pupils. The selected candidate will raise standards of pupil attainment and achievement in PE, working alongside experienced members of the Sports Department, delivering excellent pastoral care at all times. The Teacher of PE will also support the Director of Sport with the organisation of fixtures and trips, ensuring pupils are well prepared and delivering first-aid when required.

ROLE SPECIFICATION:

• Start Date: January 2025

• Working hours: Term-time only, typically between 08:00 and 18:00, plus Saturday fixtures and various school and sports events. To attend and support all pre-season training camps.

• Salary: Depending on experience.

ROLE OVERVIEW:

• In collaboration with the Head of PE and Director of Sport, to plan, prepare and teach

engaging PE lessons that ensure pupils across all Key Stages (EYFS, KS1 to KS3) make

excellent progress.

• To supervise practical PE lessons, including both indoor and outdoor classes.

• To use a range of strategies to engage students of all abilities with the subject.

• Contribute to the development of new schemes of work to enhance the overall Sport

provision.

• To guide and direct the Assistant Sports Coaches during lessons, to enhance the

effectiveness of their support.

• Monitor the attainment of all pupils in PE, promoting high standards in all areas.

• Create opportunities for all pupils to flourish in PE, particularly in a coeducational setting.

• Ensure that all physical activities and lessons are conducted in a safe environment,

adhering to Health and Safety regulations. This will also involve performing regular equipment checks.

• To assist the Director of Sport with the organisation of tournaments, fixtures and trips.

• Under the supervision of the Director of Sport, to be responsible for coaching and transporting teams as required. This will include some weekend fixtures.

• To work collaboratively in the delivery of PE in order to facilitate the effective development of the subject throughout the school.

• To offer feedback to colleagues and parents on the pupil’s progress during the year, including School reports and parents’ evenings.

• Establish positive relationships with pupils, staff and wider School community.

• Actively contribute to the co-curricular activities programme.

• Keep up to date with trends in the sector, and incorporating this into the department.

• Undertake lifeguarding training and first aid training, ensuring qualifications do not lapse, and carry out these responsibilities when required.

Other Duties:

• Support school events (e.g. Sports Days, Open Days), including occasional weekends.

• Always promote safeguarding and the welfare of the children in the school’s care, in accordance with the school’s safeguarding policies.

• Be conversant with and adhere to the school’s Child Protection & Safeguarding, First Aid and Data Protection policies.

• Uphold the ethos and values of St John’s Beaumont School.

• Undertake additional training for the better performance of duties.

• Covering other colleagues, when required.

• Any other reasonable task as directed by the Headteacher and Director of Sport.

Knowledge

• In-depth knowledge of an appropriate Physical Education and Sports curriculum at a Prep School E

• Understanding of the key components of Physical Education lessons for both boys and girls in a coeducational setting E

Experience

• Experience teaching Physical Education in a School environment with Prep-School aged pupils E

• Experience working or learning in Roman Catholic school or in an independent school D

• Experience of stretching highly performing pupils and encouraging them to aim still higher D

• Experience of teaching children with mild learning difficulties D

Skills & Personal Qualities

• To be confident, with excellent interpersonal skills to build a strong rapport with pupils, and to demonstrate patience and tact E

• To be committed to safeguarding all pupils and complete training in this area E

• To be imaginative and demonstrate flair for teaching E

• To be an excellent communicator, orally and in writing, with pupils, parents and other staff E

• To build positive relationships with parents and colleagues E

• Ability to motive and inspire pupils to participate in PE E

Qualifications

• Hold a degree in Physical Education or a related field E

• Holds QTS status E

• First Aid and Lifeguarding Qualification (or willingness to obtain this) E
