Job Description

St. Joseph’s College is seeking a passionate and dedicated Physical Education Teacher to join our dynamic Sports Department. The successful candidate will support the Director of Sports in the effective running of the PE department, contributing to the academic and extracurricular development of students. The role aims to maintain high standards of achievement, learning, and student development, aligned with the College’s Lasallian Catholic ethos.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

  • Deliver engaging and well-structured PE lessons that align with the National Curriculum and departmental schemes of work.
  • Inspire students to achieve exceptional progress and maintain high academic standards.
  • Regularly assess student progress, provide constructive feedback, and maintain accurate records of achievements.
  • Use a variety of teaching strategies to cater to diverse learning needs, including SEND/EAL students, in collaboration with the inclusion team.
  • Promote a positive ethos of enjoyment and achievement within both staff and students, celebrating individual gifts and talents.
  • Set and mark homework in line with departmental policy, and monitor underachieving students using performance data.
  • Support the administration of internal examinations and public exams as required.
  • Comply with all health and safety protocols, attending fixtures and trips as necessary.
  • Experience in delivering KS4 and KS5 theory lessons, and rugby experience is desirable.
  • Mentor and support PGCE and ECT students as required.

Departmental Contributions

  • Assist the Director of Sports in curriculum planning and ensure progression across key stages.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of teaching and learning strategies, addressing areas for development from internal and external reviews.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, reviews, and the formal Performance Management process.
  • Promote the department by participating in Open Evenings and other school events.
  • Support the professional development of department staff, ensuring they are up-to-date with current issues.

Classroom & Student Management

  • Maintain high expectations for student behavior and ensure a positive, disciplined learning environment.
  • Set work for absent students when necessary, and take accurate registers at the beginning of each lesson.

Pastoral & Extra-Curricular

  • Contribute to the school’s pastoral care system and support the wider school community.
  • Lead and support extra-curricular activities that extend students’ learning experiences, including educational visits.

Professional Expectations

  • Maintain high professional standards in line with Ofsted and DfE requirements.
  • Promote the Catholic and Lasallian ethos throughout the College.
  • Uphold safeguarding policies and report concerns promptly.
  • Actively support equality, diversity, and inclusion in all school activities.
  • Follow all policies and procedures set by the Director of Sports, senior leadership, and Co-Headteachers.
