At St Bede’s and St Joseph’s we teach students to think critically and logically in mathematics lessons. The aim of this is to prepare students with the mathematical competency that will allow our students to thrive in any community and in any future career.
Mathematics is a key and exciting subject area within the College where all mathematics colleagues work hard on developing good attitudes towards mathematics which is paying dividends across every subject in the College. Developing confident, resilient mathematicians with skills for life begins in Year 7 and is further developed in our student centred 5-year curriculum.
· KS3 Maths – Year 7 – 9
In KS3, the three-year curriculum is designed so that all students are learning the same topic at the same time. Teachers understand ways to progress through a topic by delving deeper, making links with other areas of mathematics and by providing challenge through opportunities to reason and problem solve.
Students are set from Year 9 and continue to be set through all other year groups. Class sizes vary but characteristically top sets are larger and classes reduce in size, allowing lower sets with smaller numbers. Classes are organised into half-year groups with two top sets in each year.
· KS4 Maths – Year 10-11
The KS4 two-year schemes of work broadly follow the Edexcel GCSE mathematics GCSE (9–1) – 1MA1 specification and build on students prior learning from KS3. Students will follow either the foundation or higher scheme of work depending on prior assessments as well as teacher judgement based on classwork and independent learning. Problem-solving is at the heart of the new curriculum and opportunities to develop problem solving and reasoning skills in mathematics are embedded within each unit of work.
· KS5 – Year 12-13
Mathematics is a very popular subject at Advanced level with very good and improving results. Further Maths is also taught successfully. We have a strong subject team who are committed to working together, planning and preparing resources to share workload and to develop fun and creative lessons. Staff prepare personalised lessons to meet the needs of every student in their class.
For the A Level course there are four classes; two. in Year 12 and two in Year 13, with a number of students studying Further Maths in each year group. Both GCSE and A Level course follow the Edexcel specifications
