2nd in Department of English

As the Deputy  Head of English at St Annes RC Voluntary Academy, you will play a pivotal role in driving excellence in the teaching and learning of English across Key Stages 3 and 4. As a member of the school’s middle leadership team, you will be instrumental in realising our vision to “be outstanding in all we do” and to “serve the children” through the effective implementation of the “St Annes Way” (SAW).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Head of English in leading  the English department in delivering a high-quality, engaging curriculum that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum
  • Ensure that the teaching of spoken language, reading, and writing is of the highest standard, enabling all students to make excellent progress
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of the English department, identifying areas for improvement and implementing effective strategies to address them
  • Provide strong, inspirational leadership to the English team, fostering a culture of continuous professional development and collaborative working
  • Develop and implement robust assessment systems to track student progress and inform future planning
  • Promote the love of reading and literature across the school, encouraging students to explore a wide range of texts
  • Liaise effectively with senior leaders, parents, and other stakeholders to communicate the department’s vision and achievements

Requirements:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
  • Extensive experience teaching English at both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4
  • Proven track record of supporting/or  leading a successful English department or team
  • Excellent subject knowledge and understanding of effective English pedagogy
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and a passion for improving student outcomes

Desirable Qualities:

  • Experience of working in a Catholic school or similar faith-based environment
  • Ability to teach other humanities subjects (e.g. History, Religious Education)
  • Involvement in whole-school initiatives or extra-curricular activities

Salary: Main Scale/UPS + TLR 2a
