Catholic Education Trust / Phase: Secondary with sixth form / Role: Teaching / Lecturing
Our School
Salesian is a co-educational 11-18 Catholic comprehensive school and is part of the Xavier Catholic Education Trust.
The school has 1400 students and is situated on two sites approximately one mile apart, near to the centre of Chertsey. The main school is situated at Guildford Road and our Sixth Form College has 467 students on its own site at Highfield Road.
A Standards at the school are very high and students achieve exceptionally well. In last year’s GCSE examinations 47% of all grades were 7-9, 92% 4-9 and our overall Progress 8 was +0.96. At A’ level 32% of grades were A*-A and 68% A*-B.
great deal of emphasis is placed on the co-curricular life at Salesian and outside the formal curriculum there are numerous opportunities for students to take part in a wide range of activities – drama, sport, music, exchanges, away days, Duke of Edinburgh, retreats and trips.
We work hard to ensure that staff and students are well looked after but we also set exceedingly high expectations of everyone at the school and underperformance is always challenged. When you get the balance right between challenge and support you get great teaching, when you have great teaching the school becomes heavily-oversubscribed and when this is the case parents believe in what you are trying to do and support you in doing it.
Salesian was designated as a Teaching School in September 2014 (since becoming a Teaching School Hub) in recognition of our track record of success in training teachers and supporting schools in difficulty. The Teaching School Hub offers a range of exciting opportunities for staff to engage in professional development and school-to-school support activities. Since 2015 we have been accrediting our own trainee teachers as part of the Teach South East SCITT partnership.
Candidates are welcome to contact the school to find out more information about specific departments or pay us a visit. We take recruitment very seriously and want to do all we can to find the best staff for our students.
I believe Salesian is a fantastic place to work and I am excited about the prospect of appointing a colleague with whom we can work closely in order to drive the school forward. I am hoping that you will be that person.
God bless,
Paul Gower | Headteacher

The Religious Education Department at Salesian
The Religious Education Department is a core department at Salesian, and we work together with Chaplaincy to develop the spiritual and moral life of our students. We are enthusiastic, engaging and proud to work with the vision of St. John Bosco. Behaviour and relationships are exceptional, and we are highly regarded by students in lessons.
We strive to continually improve our excellent academic record, our spiritual engagement, and our development of a faith community. We are extremely happy with our strong exam results and our uptake at A Level with results amongst the best in the area. Currently there are seven specialist RE teachers, two Salesian teaching-chaplains and one part time chaplain in the department.
All students study R.E. in each year at Salesian. At Key Stage 3, the Curriculum is varied and carefully planned supported by a wide range of department resources and follows the new Religious Education Directory. At Key Stage 4 all students undertake the full GCSE, following AQA specification B (Catholic Christianity, Judaism, and Moral Themes). We are a popular subject in our Sixth Form College and the number of students taking A Level Religious Studies remains strong each year. We offer the Religious Studies: Philosophy and Ethics ‘A’ level with AQA. All
students undertake Sixth Form R.E. within which the Edexcel Extended Project (EPQ) is completed and social justice is discussed.
Our connection to Don Bosco and the Salesian community is evident throughout the whole school. His vision to educate to a high standard, instil moral value, and foster positive experiences both inside and outside of the classroom is supported and furthered by our department. We are fully committed to the extra-curricular life of the students, and we are involved in a variety of trips and activities such as visits to Rome, religious exhibitions, and visits to places of worship.
We are also proud of our daily prayer opportunities including Masses and Exposition with our on-site priests. Sacraments are offered and whole school Masses are celebrated and enjoyed by the entire school community. Clubs such as Alpha, CAFOD young leaders, and Salesian Compassion in Action are offered by members of the department.
As a Teaching school and SCITT we are committed to teacher training and take a range of trainees as well as offering support for ECTs and those looking to progress to the next stage of their career.
We are extremely proud of our department at Salesian and look forward greatly to welcoming a colleague who is passionate about the progression of our students both academically and spiritually, as we are.
