SEMH Learning Support Assistant

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people? We’re looking for a dedicated and empathetic SEMH Learning Support Assistant to join our team and support some of our most vulnerable students.

In this rewarding role, you’ll provide patience, understanding, and firm boundaries to help students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs thrive both academically and personally. Working closely with students in mainstream lessons and within the Compass Centre, you’ll be a key part of their journey to overcome barriers to learning and achieve their potential.

The Compass Centre

Our Compass Centre is a supportive haven for students with complex needs and behavioural challenges. Led by our SEMH Lead and a skilled team of mentors, the Centre offers targeted interventions and personalised support. As an in-class SEMH Learning Support Assistant, you’ll assist students within the Centre and help them transition successfully into mainstream classes.

Why Join St. Ambrose?

Our three-year trend of results puts us amongst the top-performing secondaries and in Salford and our mantra of ‘improving on previous best’ means we’re all about getting even better. We are an excellent school and you could be part of our journey to secure Inclusive Catholic Excellence. We don’t value Ofsted as much as the opinion of staff, pupils and parents and their feedback tells us that we are doing well. If Ofsted is what you judge us by please read the report, but we would rather you came and walked the corridors, spoke to pupils and staff and made up your own mind.

Every day we live out our Catholic mission to Love, Learn and Lead.

At St. Ambrose, we value staff well-being and foster a positive, inclusive culture:

  • Work-Life Balance: Flexible policies, including Flexi Days, pet bereavement leave, and positive dependents/parental leave.
  • Employee Support: Access to an Employee Assistance Programme with mental health, financial, legal advice, and life coaching.
  • Community: Regular staff recognition through our nomination system and Thank an Educator Day.
  • Perks: Free toast at break, end-of-term staff breakfasts, free onsite parking, and staff clubs including book, running, football, and reading.
  • Schemes: Cycle to Work and Technology Schemes.
  • 100% of staff say they are valued, enjoy coming to work and are proud to work here
  • Staff attendance is high, we are fully staffed and the number of long-serving staff shows that people like to stay with us
  • You’re part of a great team, with strong CPD opportunities and a commitment to a work-life balance. Our lunchtime reading and research clubs for staff are very well attended.
  • We’re a welcoming place – you’ll even have a laugh as you do your job. Staff who have joined recently have said that it has reinvigorated their love of teaching and they want to stay in the profession. No-one likes to leave our school: we believe on holding on to our staff and pupils.
  • We are inclusive, SEND-focused, trauma-informed and we have high expectations and standards. We don’t give up on children. Our outcomes and attendance for vulnerable pupils are above national averages for SEND and disadvantaged groups, but we’re not complacent and we won’t stop until we have achieved equity for all.
  • Our pupils are respectful, kind and committed – this is a place where staff can teach and young people can learn in a calm environment.
